Efts and other wonders

Between the bouts of rain yesterday (and that is not a complaint, the rain is wonderful) I was out with my camera and caught sight of some marvellous little creatures.

Please excuse some of the pictures being a little out of focus but I did have to get very close on a macro setting and the water confused the camera somewhat.

Here's a tadpole. You can see how the shape of the head is changing to that of a small frog body. Even though he hasn't developed legs and arms yet, he is evolving into something new.

And here's one I made earlier...

Take a close look. Isn't he beautiful. Further on in his development than the tadpole above, this little chap is almost a fully developed froglet apart from the tail, which will soon be absorbed back into his body.

Here he is again. I was amazed I got so close as froglets are wary of predators.

After the froglet disappeared, this chap wandered past just inside the edge of the water. Although a little out of focus this is a water louse, a close relative of the wood louse. This is the pond owner's friend and will hoover up plant and animal waste helping to keep the pond clean.

Still out of focus, here's one last treat. This is an Eft, a baby newt. You can see the different between him and his cousin, the froglet. Although they looked very similar out of the egg, the eft stays elongated and will not lose his tail, also his legs are spaced much further apart.

Here's a better shot and you can clearly see the development of limbs.

Guess where I will be tonight - camping out by the pond with my camera!
